Overview
National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) is an autonomous organization that focuses on improving the quality of life of individuals with disabilities. Their inclusive campus has students and staff with diverse abilities. NISH wanted to develop an online learning platform that could deliver its courses to a wider audience, including people with hearing and speech disabilities. They also wanted to build video courses for Indian Sign Language (ISL).
Goal
NISH aimed to launch an online learning platform that could deliver their academic courses and courses on sign language and speech and hearing disabilities to a wider audience, including people with disabilities. The learning platform had to be accessible to all and provide video courses for ISL.
Solution
Designing and developing an elearning platform that delivers academic courses on sign language and speech and hearing disabilities
Enfin was approached by NISH to develop an online learning platform that would serve everyone, including people with disabilities. The Enfin team conducted user journey research to understand the teaching and learning patterns of NISH’s students and trainers/teachers. Based on their findings, they prepared the proper UX for the platform and built an accessibility-enabled learning platform with features such as video content delivery, online assessments, video playing with auto-closed captions, etc.
The platform was designed to be compatible with all devices, including those that use assistive technology. The Enfin team also ensured that the platform was compatible with different web browsers, including those that are commonly used in India. They made sure that the platform was responsive and easy to navigate, with clear instructions and an intuitive interface.
The video courses for ISL were created with the help of NISH’s sign language experts. The videos were shot and edited with closed captions and audio descriptions, making them accessible to all. The Enfin team made sure that the videos were optimized for all devices and could be easily streamed over different networks. The learning platform also had an online assessment feature, which allowed students to take tests and receive instant feedback. The platform was designed to be user-friendly, with clear instructions and easy-to-use controls.
Results
Accessibility of courses to students with hearing and speech disabilities
The Enfin team successfully developed an online learning platform that met NISH’s requirements. The platform was accessible to all, including people with hearing and speech disabilities. The video courses for ISL were well-received and proved to be a valuable resource for learning sign language. The online assessments feature helped students to monitor their progress and improve their knowledge. The platform was launched successfully and received positive feedback from users.
Conclusion
Enfin’s collaboration with NISH was successful in creating an inclusive online learning platform that met the needs of a diverse user base. The Enfin team’s research and design efforts ensured that the platform was accessible to all, regardless of their abilities. The video courses for ISL were a valuable addition and helped to promote sign language learning.
